Transport/Shipping Officer

 

Job Profile

Within delegated authority, the Shipping Officer will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic and thus not all inclusive nor are all duties carried out by all Shipping Officers.)
 

  1. Liaise with appropriate staff in the Resources Division and the Regional Bureaux and, for cargoes bound to landlocked countries, the Logistics Service, in order to determine the most efficient mode of calling forward commodities, taking into consideration type of commodity, quantity, port conditions, weather conditions, freight market condition, etc.

 

  1. Negotiate and conclude ocean transportation arrangements with shipping lines, including the chartering of vessels, on either a short or long-term basis or conclude ad-hoc individual rate agreements.

 

  1. Consolidate and plan shipments both for quotation to the liner market and for presentation to the charter market.

 

  1. Manage the operational aspects of all chartered vessels carrying organisation commodities , including loading and discharging operations and the contracting of stevedoring services.

 

  1. Appoint, instruct and supervise a network of Charterer's Protecting Agents at load and discharge ports in accordance with the agreed terms and conditions of the charter party and provide advice to the organisation appointed agents and the country offices as required.

 

  1. Supervise the performance of organisation appointed shipping and forwarding agents, stevedores and other ancillary contractors at load ports of discharge.

 

  1. Prepare and implement policy guidelines and operational directives and procedures in respect of ocean liner transport activity.

 

  1. Supervise and provide training to other shipping staff as required.

 

  1. Liaise with other donors and relief agencies involved in food aid ocean transport operations.

 

  1.         Liaise closely with agents and suppliers to ensure that cargo readiness matches vessels arrival.

 

  1.         Prepare and maintain statistical reports on shipping and chartering information.

 

  1.         Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Language

- Working knowledge (proficiency/Level C) of Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish

- and Limited knowledge (intermediate/Level B) of another official organisation preferred language, Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish or Portuguese. - Limited knowledge (intermediate/Level B) of English is required under all circumstances

 

Experience

Officer : At least 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in shipping, freight forwarding and/or general maritime transport. Working knowledge of shipping operations, bookings and rate structures or chartering/shipping/port operations, charter parties and charter freight conditions.

Manager : At least 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in shipping, freight forwarding and/or general maritime transport. Good knowledge of shipping operations, bookings and rate structures or chartering/shipping/port operations, charter parties and charter freight conditions.
 

Senior Manager : At least 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in shipping, freight forwarding and/or general maritime transport including at least 3 yearsat the international level. Demonstrated full working knowledge of liner operations, bookings and rate structures or chartering/shipping/port operations, charter parties and charter freight conditions.

Director : At least 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in shipping, freight forwarding and/or general maritime transport including at least 4 years at the international level. Demonstrated full working knowledge of liner operations, bookings and rate structures or chartering/shipping/port operations, charter parties and charter freight conditions. Considerable supervisory and managerial experience.

 

Education

University Degree in Business Administration, Shipping, Transport Management or other related fields.

 

Other Skills

Level C in a second official organisation preferred language.
